Zao Fox Village in Winter: Hours, Snow, What to Wear and Driving
Winter is when many people most want to see the foxes: their coats are at their thickest and the woods are often white. It is also when the days are shortest and the roads need the most care. Here is what to know before you go.

Why winter
Foxes grow a dense winter coat, and against snow they look their best — this is the season behind most of the photos you will have seen. Snow is never guaranteed on a given day, and some days are simply grey and cold; plan for both.
What to wear
- Waterproof boots with grip. Paths can be snowy, icy or slushy.
- Layers, a hat and gloves. You will be outside for an hour or more on a hillside.
- Nothing that dangles. Scarf ends and bag charms attract foxes — tuck them away.
- Strollers are not allowed in any season; bring a baby carrier.
Driving in winter
- Winter tyres are essential from December to March. Most rental companies in Tohoku fit them in winter, but confirm when you book.
- The village is in the hills and gets more snow than the towns below. Drive slowly and keep your distance.
- The sun sets early — around 16:20 in December. If you leave the village at closing time, your drive to Kakuda (about 50 minutes) will be in the dark.
- Roads in town are usually clear, but can freeze in the early morning.
- The Zao Echo Line to the Okama crater is closed in winter (roughly early November to late April).
A winter day that isn't rushed
The simplest winter plan is to visit in the late morning or early afternoon, aim to finish by 15:30, and not have to be anywhere at a fixed time afterwards. That is where staying with us helps: check-in at the house is self-service from 3 PM until 11 PM, so if the snow slows you down, nobody is waiting at a front desk.
- 11:30Lunch in Shiroishi.
- 13:00Zao Fox Village (last entry 15:30).
- 15:00Leave while there is still light; shop for dinner on the way.
- 16:00Arrive in Kakuda, turn on the heaters, and settle in for the evening.
