Gather around the table in three connecting tatami rooms, then enjoy movie nights on the 100-inch 4K theater. Close the sliding doors and each room becomes private, so families can take a room of their own. The house is comfortable for up to 7 guests; there is one bathroom and one toilet, two washbasins, and sleeping, bathing and the toilet are all on the ground floor.
In Kakuda, Miyagi. A historic merchant house that once sustained the region's economy, and a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. The transom carvings, doors and sliding panels that mark the passage of time remain, while the bathroom and kitchen have been fully modernized.
For family reunions, overnight trips with friends, or a quiet stay for two — spend the whole day together, with no one to disturb you and nothing to hold back.
Concerns common to traditional guesthouse stays are resolved. All water facilities have been fully renovated. Clean and functional bathrooms, toilets, and kitchens, complete with air conditioning and Wi-Fi. We promise a stress-free stay where you can live like a resident.
Beyond overnight stays, the house can be rented for the day. Cosplay and portrait photography, pre-wedding shoots, and small group retreats for university seminars and teams. Gold folding screens, carved transoms, the engawa veranda, the black board fence and the koi pond — backdrops no studio can build, yours alone for the day.
From the gate to the tatami rooms, the bath and the kitchen, and the pond where the koi swim — arranged in the order you would meet them, from arrival to departure. Everything you would want to see before booking is there.
Just a one-minute walk away, the legendary "Marusen" storehouse where three zashiki-warashi (child spirits of good fortune) are said to live. Daikoyama Park with its full-size H-II rocket model. And Kakuda's own local flavors.
Why stay in Kakuda? The town sits in the middle of southern Miyagi, so you can head out in a different direction each day and come back to the same quiet house. Sendai Airport is about 45 minutes away, Sendai Station about 1 hour, Shiroishi-Zao Station (Shinkansen) about 25 minutes and Matsushima about 70 minutes, all on local roads. Public transport is limited here, so we recommend a rental car.
A day out from the house, by season
Winter (late December – early March): the snow monsters of Mt. Zao by snowcat from Sumikawa Snow Park (65 min), then a hot spring in Togatta Onsen on the way back (46 min).
Spring (early – mid April): the Hitome Senbonzakura cherry trees along the Shiroishi River (21 min) and Shiroishi Castle (29 min).
Summer – autumn: Zao Fox Village (about 50 min), the Okama crater lake (80 min; Zao Echo Line open late April to early November) and down to Togatta Onsen — one mountain road, no backtracking (see our Zao Fox Village guide).
Rainy day: stay close — the Marusen zashiki-warashi storehouse (1 min on foot), the Kakuda City Folk Museum on the old street, and the Space Tower and Cosmo House in Taiyama Park (4 min by car).

A supermarket, convenience store and local restaurants are within walking distance.
